My fursona, Skybox! They are simply an anthro black skimmer, and a self-insert, so I don't really have any big lore here.
The ref sheet:
I choose a black skimmer, most simply, because they're my favorite bird :] . I also like that they are charismatic and silly despite their strange appearance, and I too wish to be strange and silly. Also also I like that they're not very sexually dimorphic...
In my experience yapping with bird people and ornithologists, people who are REALLY into birds tend to base their favorite on whichever they've personally worked with. It makes sense! You have to spend a lot of time with that bird species, so you really have time to get to know and be charmed by them. This is my case with skimmers. I've been a Audubon volunteer steward for a nesting colony near my parents house for a couple of years, so I would literally sit on the beach for about 3 hours every Friday and watch these guys all day while doing education on them to the general public (they nested on a public beach). I learned a lot about them, and I could get so many people to be a little more charmed by these birds, it was great! Not without the occasional incessantly rude person, but such is life. Anywho, after so many hours just watching their goofy antics, I really love them a lot.
Fun factoid: I didn't put that bird band on them for no reason! J24 is a real black skimmer that I helped a professor monitoring their colonies band! Last I heard they were still being reported, my little survivor! It's not easy being a baby skimmer. But skimmers have pretty good survival rates once they're adults, which is unusual for birds, which typically have a consistent suvival rate (like 50%) their entire lives.
Anywho, I don't have much to say about their personality, since they're a self-insert and I describing myself feels weird?? I guess the main beats are that they're overall a pretty chill guy. They're plenty happy to just sit around and do nothing but watch birds for hours. But they're also excitable in the right scenarios, like finding a species they were looking for or getting shoved around in the mosh pit >:3 . They're a little rough around the edges, but they try to be gentle and kind. No squishing or screaming at bugs around here!
Their name was kinda a joke, they were originally a joke fursona because I find the concept of a furry black skimmer funny. Black skimmers are funny as is, and that beak would be absolutely HAZARDOUS. I thought about changing it to something more normal, but I don't know, I kinda like Skybox. I went over a bunch of names, and it stuck out the most. A silly name for a silly guy based off a silly bird. Hell yeah.
Anyways here's all the art I have of them so far. I've only had them for a few months so it's a little small, but I'm working on it!
